After installing CU23 and the security updates to patch the Hafnium exploit my OAB stopped working like described above. I was concerned that Microsoft may have intentionally disabled it in this way to protect against Hafnium so I was reluctant to fix it. After researching I decided to apply the above fix and it indeed fixed my OAB issues. I can also happily report that my Exchange server is still protected from the Hafnium exploits. I used Nessus to scan my exchange server from an outside address to verify that my server was not vulnerable.

8. Wait a minute or two (or whatever time you specified for the Polling Interval) 9. On the CAS server, re-check \program files\microsoft\exchange server\clientaccess\OAB for web distribution

After completing this tutorial you will have configured Microsoft Outlook to always reference the latest version of the global address book directly from the email server rather than referencing a downloaded local copy.

After completing these steps, you can reopen Outlook, make sure that it is not in Offline mode, and search for an email address to confirm that it is now referencing the most current global address book.

This article explains how to create a new Offline Address Book (OAB) on Exchange Server 2010. The Offline Address Book is an offline copy of all the email addresses within Exchage Server. Users of Exchange can download the OAB and save it on their computers, so they have access to the address abook even if Exchange Server is offline. The Offline Address Book can be created by server administrator, and he \ she decides which addresses or information is accessible to Exchange users. To create a new Offline Address Book follow the steps below.

When you configure an Outlook profile to use Cached Mode the client software uses a special address book to resolve email addresses and other information. This address book is named Offline Address Book (OAB) and is built and provided by the Exchange Organisation hosting the mailbox. The client downloads OAB changes when Outlook starts and checks for further OAB changes in intervals.

Also, if I have an existing gal , address lists and oab created, do I need to recreate these for exchange 2016? Or can I just attach those to current 2016 databases. I know gal is not attached to any specific version of exchNge, unsure about oab?

The issue, as explained in detail by Exchange MVP Andrew Higginbotham here, and mentioned by Microsoft in the release notes and a subsequent blog post, is that Exchange Server 2013 will create a new default offline address book for the organization.

The offline address-book (OAB) of Exchange is available when the user is not connected, Since Exchange 2007, it is updated via a Web-based distribution point. But what if you need to set up several Offline address-books for a variety of sites or geographical regions, each to be distributed by a different point? How would you do that? Krishna demonstrates.

Updating the offline address book is the process to force the update the offline address book immediately. As we just created a new OAB, it has to be updated with all the recipients in the organization. The Update process communicates with the Active directory and gets all the details of contacts. It is normally scheduled to run once per day, and you can change the schedule depending on the size of the OAB and organization requirement.

Sometimes, the OAB may cause problems and it may not update itself. The most basic troubleshooting step is to rerun the Update-Offlineaddressbook PowerShell cmdlet, restart the file distribution service and try to force the AD replication. You may also try to move OAB to the new server if the server performance is very bad. Move-Offlineaddressbook cmdlet helps to move the OAB to the new Server. I hope you like this article and it helps you in the real time scenario to configuring multiple OAB for various regions.

When users are using Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016 then, he will get a folder named as OAB that itself holds the subfolders along with name after account GUIDs. When users want to configure several Exchange accounts then, they will find a particular folder for each profile that they have. The easiest and quickest method is to rename them: Offline address book folder appends .old behind it.

NOTE: The "u" stands for "Unicode". If you are still utilizing the Outlook 2002/XP or the earlier version, then, the file names cannot be prefixed with a "u" as Offline address book(OAB) files are stored in ANSI format.

OAB file stands for Offline address book containing names, email addresses and other information related to the contact name for Outlook application. The OAB file is supported by Outlook express, Outlook 2010 and 2016. Hence, one can easily open OAB file in it.

In order to programmatically hide all the existing groups from the address book and/or Outlook client navigation pane then the guidance in this article can be followed. Yet when creating new teams and/or groups an additional configuration step will be required if it is desired to have them appear in Outlook.

You may remember our older post how to set address book policy based on group membership. After using this method above for a while we've found there is a far easier solution to get group membership with a recursive option on newer systems. We've also updated setting address book policy method with few more checks so it's a bit more error proof.

Outlookclients need to download a copy of the OAB before they are fullyfunctional when working offline. The OAB contains a subset of theproperties held for objects in Active Directory. However, users areseldom aware of this fact because the OAB contains all the data theytypically need for email or to find recipients. Data that depend onpointers between Active Directory objects are unavailable offline.(Managers and their reports and group membership are the bestexamples.) The same is true for customized properties you add to theGAL unless you customize address templates to add them to the OAB.
