Plot Summary
The film begins with a quote from journalist Chris Hedges: The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug.
The film then shows a U.S. Army bomb disposal unit in Baghdad in 2004. The team consists of Staff Sergeant Matthew Thompson (Guy Pearce), Sergeant JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie), and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty). They use a robot to inspect an improvised explosive device (IED) hidden under some sheets. Thompson decides to place a charge to detonate the IED manually, but he is killed by a cell phone-triggered explosion. Eldridge blames himself for not shooting the man with the phone.
The team gets a new leader, Sergeant First Class William James (Jeremy Renner), who is an expert but reckless bomb technician. He often defuses bombs by hand and does not follow protocol or communicate with his teammates. He also collects pieces of bombs as souvenirs. Sanborn and Eldridge are frustrated and scared by his behavior and want to survive their remaining days of deployment.
The film shows various incidents that test the teams skills and nerves, such as a car bomb in a crowded street, a sniper attack in the desert, a suicide bomber in a warehouse, and a booby-trapped body in an abandoned building. James also befriends a young Iraqi boy named Beckham (Christopher Sayegh), who sells DVDs near the base. James suspects that Beckham has been killed and replaced by another boy when he sees him wearing a bomb vest.
The film ends with James returning home to his wife Connie (Evangeline Lilly) and his infant son. He feels alienated from his family and civilian life. He tells his son that he loves only one thing: disarming bombs. He then decides to go back to Iraq for another tour of duty.
